MARKS BEST MOVIE SONGS EVER (1955-99) COUNTDOWN ... NO. 45 SUPERFLY–CURTIS MAYFIELD (#8, 1973, Super Fly) The first of two songs in this countdown by the late Curtis Mayfield (1942-1999) as a solo performer came from the soundtrack to the motion picture Super Fly, which starred Ron ONeal as Youngblood Priest, a man selling cocaine but trying to stop doing so and quitting the business. A lot goes on in this seedy blaxploitation film and somehow in the end, Priest, ratted out by Fat Freddie, one of his workers, comes out of it alive. Mayfields soundtrack did wonders for the movie, actually outselling the movie in revenues. Mayfield wrote and produced all the songs for the soundtrack as it held down the No. 1 spot on the album chart for four straight weeks. Mayfields album was a critical success as Rolling Stones Bob Donat said the album was not only a superior, imaginative soundtrack, but fine funky music as well and the best of Curtis Mayfields four albums made since he left the Impressions. The second of the two big hits from the Super Fly soundtrack by Mayfield is coming up much later. Thoughts, memories? Enjoy!
