MARLBORO, N.J. (WABC) -- Marlboro Police are searching for a missing autistic teenager. We waited an hour, two hours, then we started driving around, maybe hes just having coffee or something, and we couldnt find him and then became kind of desperate, said Walter Karwan, Michaels father. Michael Karwan is 19 years old. Hes autistic, but highly functioning. Frustrated, possibly over schoolwork, he went walking from his parents Marlboro home Tuesday night and never came back. He left his cellphone here, he left his credit cards, he left his money, said Theresa Karwan, Michaels mother. I think hes walked and walked and I think that after a while he just got confused. He didnt know where he was, it was freezing that night, Walter Karwan said. Dozens of friend and family are searching the county, posting notices everywhere. Police at first, got many calls about sightings. Some of these calls that we followed up with turned out to be false leads, but we did develop two leads out of Freehold Borough, said Captain Bart Lombardo, Marlboro Township Police Department. Now they know it was him. His hands were freezing according to a worker there. He went to the hotel in Freehold, he asked for a room, didnt have any ID on him, they didnt give it to him, and it just spiraled from that point on, Walter Karwan said. Michael was wearing a black jacket, jeans, and green sneakers. Thats not enough to keep him warm. Now a lead suggests he might have somehow gotten on a bus to the city. Hes been to Times Square with his family before. He may now believe he is in too much trouble to go back home. I dont think hes able to process that this is not a big deal we just want him home. Ill sell the world to have him home, Walter Karwan said. Police ask that if you see him, dont let him out of your sight and call 911. Walter Karwan had a message for his son, Michael, I want you to come back, remember, you promised me that you would go to the movies with me on Friday. We love you and we cant wait to see you.
