MARONITE CATHOLIC CHURCH IN LAS VEGAS: ARABIC-FILIPINO TIES In 2008 there was a Mission Catholic Church sprung from the outskirts of Las Vegas. A unique Catholic Church some may seem to recognize. We are only familiar with the Roman Catholic Church under the Roman Catholic Diocese of Las Vegas lead by Bishop Joseph Pepe. As the late great Blessed Pope John Paul II stated in one of his speeches at the Synod (Conference) of Bishops of the Eastern Catholic Church: “Our Catholic Church has two lungs: Western (The Latin/Roman) & the Eastern (Antioch/Holy Land) Catholic Church. So our Catholic Church must breathe on two lungs.” In Las Vegas alone has the various kinds of Catholic Rites such as: Syro-Malabar from India where the Apostle Thomas established; Chaldean; Armenian; & the Maronite Catholic Church from the Holy Land in Lebanon (also known as Galilee). The Maronite Catholic Mission of Las Vegas was established in 2008 with the help of the Lebanese & Arabs here in Las Vegas. This Mission is the Saint Sharbel Maronite Catholic Church located at 10325 Rancho Destino Road, Las Vegas, Nevada 89183. It is a small church made from two pairs of storage containers built with the ambiance of the Catholic Churches of the Holy Land and in Lebanon. Through the years, the Mission has grown more and more as parishioners from far and near visiting the miraculous relics of the Patron Saint Sharbel and as well as to experience the Liturgy Holy Mass of the Holy Land where the Consecration of the Bread and Wine made to the Body and Blood of Jesus us sung in Aramaic – the language of Jesus Himself. Visitors and gusts from other states and even countries flock to visit the church to experience the liturgy as well as to seek intercession and healing from the Patron Saint Sharbel. On 2nd of July 2013, the statue of Saint Sharbel inside the Church was found oozing with miracle oil from his body: hands, face, and his chest. Over 300 documented miracles were accounted on the saint’s intercession. And here in Las Vegas, has accounted also various miracles of healing most especially with the Filipino Community. Saint Sharbel Mission has increased in population through the years with the help of the Filipino Community. Majority of the non-Arabic parishioners of the Mission are Filipinos and are highly appreciated by the Pastor Reverend Father Nadim Abou Zeid who is a Lebanese and loves the pansit and the Lechon. The Filipino Community celebrates the Annual Filipino Christmas Party and the Christmas Novena. The Holy Mass is being organized non other than the Filipino Community. The Mission also has the First Filipino Maronite. Saint Sharbel Catholic Church is a Lebanese-Arabic Mission but the heart and soul of this Church is the Filipinos. The Mission is open to all and invites everyone to visit this Mission Church with Masses Daily from 8am, Saturday anticipated Mass at 5:30pm English; and Sundays 9:30am English and 11:30am Arabic. And soon will be Filipino Mass. All are welcome. We have more than 25 Catholic Churches in Eastern (Middle Eastern, Asia, etc.) and Western (USA, Europe, etc) Catholic Churches (Rites). Matthew 28 says and authorizes the Apostles and us to Go to the ends of the earth and teach what Jesus has commanded us. And so on the later part of the Acts of the Apostles, the Apostles as well as the disciples went to all the corners of the world. They went to Antioch, Rome, Constantinople, Alexandria. In fact, St. Thomas the twin went to India. The Roman Catholic Church just became dominant because of Saints Peter and Paul who were there and established the seat of the Holy See/Papacy at Rome later on the Vatican City, which is still in Rome. The Maronite is an Eastern Rite Catholic Church from the Holy Land in Lebanon, which is former Galilee. In fact, Mary, some of the disciples and even Jesus is from Galilee, now Lebanon. The language of the rite is in Arabic and Aramaic which is the language/dialect of Jesus Himself. Maronites were established in Lebanon from the Lebanese Saint Monk Saint Maroun who lived in the mountains as an hermit and lived in solitary with no one around him. He gained thousands of followers from places. All this Catholic Churches, including the Maronites, are under the Pope of Rome and is always Catholic. There are not much difference of the rite of the Roman and other Catholic Church. So if they ask you are you a Roman Catholic? The answer is no, I AM A CATHOLIC. And any Catholic rite whether it may be Syro-Malabar, Armenian, Croatian, Maronite, or any Rite, we are but ONE, HOLY, APOSTOLIC Catholic Church. So find one on your region, State, or Country today. And experience the different flavor of the Catholic Church, but still a Catholic Church. Come and experience the Liturgy of the Holy Land Consecration sung in Aramaic-the language of Jesus. On July 2, 2013 the statue of Saint Sharbel at the Saint Sharbel Church has oozed with oil in the face, head, and chest. Visit the relic of Saint Sharbel in our Church.
