MAS colluding with Maseu: Nufam Posted on 4 November 2013 - 05:39am Eva Yeong sunbiz@thesundaily Print PETALING JAYA (Nov 4, 2013): Malaysia Airlines (MAS) and its biggest trade union, Malaysia Airlines System Employees Union Peninsular Malaysia (Maseu), are said to be colluding to block the National Union of Flight Attendants Malaysias (Nufam) right to represent the national carriers cabin crew. Nufam is alleging that some of its cabin crew members were recently approached by MAS and Maseu to sign an affidavit testifying that they had been misled to vote for Nufam through a secret ballot organised by the new trade union in June this year. It was reported that the union was formed to preserved the rights and well-being of the 7,000 national crew union members. Currently, about 1,400 cabin crew are registered as members of Maseu, which has fewer than 7,000 members. MAS is clearly seen as plotting against Nufam because we have received a statutory declaration or affidavit by several key witnesses claiming how the airline is working with Maseu to remove Nufam of its representation, a Nufam Secretariat spokesman told SunBiz. He said during a meeting on Oct 28, 2013, a cabin crew member had informed the union of MAS managements attempt at getting him to sign a declaration against the validity of the secret ballot process held in June this year. They (MAS) are using this (declaration by cabin crew) as a vehicle to file a judiciary review (by the court to re-evaluate the secret ballot process). But what they are doing here is, behind our backs, theyre calling people to put in false reports against Nufam, he added. The Nufam Secretariat spokesman said the move not only questions validity of the secret ballot process, but also that of the Ministry of Human Resources recognition of Nufam as the representative body for cabin crew. It would seem that theyre saying, whatever secret ballot exercise that was carried out by the Ministry of Human Resources (in June this year) was dubious, giving them the right of way to file the judiciary review to the High Court, he added. He said the alleged move by MAS and Maseu is disturbing as it would indicate an airline like MAS is free to undermine the laws of the country, especially the Trade Union Act and the Industrial Relations Act. Meanwhile, Nufam has received an email from MAS on Oct 30, 2013, rejecting the unions call to start discussions on a collective agreement (CA) for Nufam members, citing the judiciary review as its reason. However, it is understood that the union has not received any official documents on the judiciary review. The Nufam Secretariat spokesman said it has written to the Industrial Relations Department as well as filed a police report with regards to a cabin crew members affidavit, and is now awaiting response. The union also urged the government to review the legislative union laws in order to protect workers from rogue employers. MAS has not replied to queries by SunBiz as at press time.
