MATCH REPORT: The Calor League Premier Division BANBURY UNITED 3 Bedford Town 0 (Courtesy of David Shadbolt, Programme Editor) Banbury United move up into the play-off places, three first half goals giving them a comfortable 3-0 win over Bedford Town at the Spencer Stadium. It was rather an uneventful opening quarter of an hour to the game with little between the sides. However, it would be Banbury who would make the all-important break through on 20 minutes when good work by Albi Skendi and Adeyinka Talabi saw Kynan Isaac pick up the ball on the edge of the penalty and turn sharply to create room for a shot which he struck low and hard into the bottom corner of the net. The complexion of the game changed immediately with Banbury now becoming totally dominant. Three minutes after taking the lead, Banbury came close again when an Isaac cross from the left found Dominic Lawless, the former Bedford man’s goal-bound shot being blocked on the line by John Sonuga. United did not though have to wait long to increase their lead as in the 28th minute Albi Skendi latched on to a flick-on through from midfield and in on-goal he competently lobbed the ball over the visiting custodian into the back of the net. Banbury continued to dominate and it was only a good save by Green which denied Lawless in the 34th minute. The third goal came five minutes later when following good work by Isaac on the right, Luke Cray put an excellent cross into the centre where the incoming Lawless had the relatively easy task of slotting home from six yards. The second half was rather an anti-climax after the goal blitz in the latter stages of the first period. However, Banbury continued to have the better of the game and were always comfortably in control. The nearest United came to adding further to their first half goals came two minutes from time when some good play down the right involving Isaac and Aaron Morgan ended with Isaac shooting from the right hand edge of the six yard box, the ball going just inches over the bar. This win moves Banbury up to fifth place. It is a shame that only 123 saw this impressive performance from a United side that once they had opened the scoring played, particularly in the remainder of the first half, some good quality football which was exciting to watch and very entertaining. United manager Edwin Stein will be delighted with a second consecutive clean sheet, Bedford had their moments going forward throughout the game but some sound goalkeeping and defending meant they failed to find a way through.
