MATCH REPORTS 01/09/2103 – In the Amateurs, both teams were looking at putting in another big 90 minutes against quality opposition as they travelled to Woodford Reserve to take on Brooklands FC in a match titled “The Battle of the Brooks”. The Reserves got straight into the action, with plenty of attacking from both sides saw early chances created. It was the home side who got on the scoresheet first after 5 minutes as a cross was taken down well by the Brooklands striker to smash into the net, the Ellenbrook defence stopped thinking he was offside but no offside given, 1-0 BFC. It didn’t take long for EUFC to respond and in the 9th minute Jordan Hogan dispossessed the Brooklands player to power into the box from the left, cut inside the defender and curl his shot across the keeper into the corner, 1-1. The game was being played end-to-end, and Brooklands got the next goal; 2 strikers left unmarked in the box and the shot was partially blocked by Jake Rowlands, but it rolled just over the line, 2-1 BFC. Ellenbrook kept piling on pressure, getting a lot of dead-ball opportunities but the Brooklands defence dealt with the aerial threat. Steven Finch had a few chances to equalise for Ellenbrook, but the keeper was on top form to make some excellent saves. HT 2-1. The second half started like the first. End-to-end stuff with both teams passing well. Brooklands went 2 goals clear as a shot from the edge of the box deflected unkindly to an unmarked striker to stroke past Rowlands; EUFC calling for offside but again not given, 3-1 BFC. The pace of Charlei Burridge and Jarrad Skellham was causing problems for the home defence, and it was Burridge who provide a spark 15 mintues from time as his bullet strike from 30 yards dipped over the keeper to cause some nerves on the Brooklands bench. Ellenbrook tried for a third, but Brooklands showed their experience to see the game out. FT 3-2 BFC. Again, a game that the boys could have won but have shown that they can match it with the league’s best teams. The Firsts were looking at staying top after a massive win against Bayswater last week, but Brooklands were also looking at going top with a win so it was all to play for. Like the Reserve game, Brooklands got off to a flyer scoring inside 5 minutes; a corner ball met at the near post by the striker who had given his marker the slip, 1-0 BFC. The game was a tight contest, both teams making it a scrap in the middle but allowing the opposition time to play from the back. The Brooklands keeper was acting like a sweeper, mopping up Ellenbrook through balls with ease. It wasn’t until the 40th minute for another goal, again to Brooklands. Again, a set piece met unmarked at the near post by the Brooklands striker. 3 minutes later EUFC almost pulled one back as Paul Mason pressurised the defender to gain possession but he didn’t catch his shot properly and the keeper got down to smother, HT 2-0 BFC. In the second half, Captain Chris Nolan was pushed into the midfield to add some energy. He and Sam Burridge worked hard to quash Brooklands attacks. Then in the 55 minute, a moment of brilliance from the big No.16 of Brooklands as he chased a ball on the right and unleashed a dipping thunderbolt from 30 yards that went straight over Jake Bungert’s head for a goal, 3-0 BFC. No chance for the keeper. Brooklands thought they had another 12 minutes later but the Mulleted striker was judged to be offside. There was a wee mellee as Paul Mason was elbowed in the face by the N0.12, who was lucky not to have been sent off, but the Brooklands ran out comfortable winners, FT 3-0. The boys can have no complaints about the result as they look to having a week off with a bye and regroup for the last assault for a chance of promotion. In the Masters the Div.2 boys upset much-fancied Lost Boys Utd by winning 5-2, but the Div.3 boys went down 4-3 to Bayswater. In the Women’s Metro, the girls drew 3-3 with Maccabi. EUFC went 2-0 up at half-time, but let Maccabi back in to level 2-2. EUFC went 3-2 up but then a defensive mix-up let Maccabi back in near the end to equalise. In the previous round, Jacinda Perkins scored to level their game vs UWA 1-1, although they had chances to win the game. Well done to all our players this weekend.
