MAUI SURF AUG 1st: A combination of long-period south-southwest - TopicsExpress

MAUI SURF AUG 1st: A combination of long-period south-southwest swell and southeast swell will continue along our south facing shores today with surf in the waist-head high range, possibly higher at the better breaks. Moderate easterly windswell should be found along the east and northeast facing shores as well. Although there are no groundswells along the north shores, wrapping windswell should offer sloppy surf in select areas. The south swells should peak today and will then slowly fade into the weekend while the windswell begins to fade around Saturday. A low southeast of New Zealand late last weekend stalled south of French Polynesia Monday sending small to moderate surf in our direction. This energy should reach our shores around Tuesday or Wednesday of next week. The South Pacific won’t be very productive through the forecast period, but the long-range models are suggesting some action late in the period, so check back for updates. Far to the east of the state spins Hurricane Gil. At this time it looks like this storm will die out well before reaching close to the islands but it is too early for confidence in that forecast. Check back throughout the next week as the storm progresses. High pressure northeast of the islands will keep fresh tradewinds blowing toward Hawai`i as well as small to moderate windswell through the weekend. There may even be a little bit of northwest swell in the near future, but it’s far too early to discuss with any confidence. Check back for updates.
