MAYOR BLOG!: As we receive our utility bills today, I wanted to give you a little perspective about this year and the weather. The City and our residents have experienced higher than normal utility bills due to the cold weather. The City’s wholesale electric bill for January was $508,072, which was 86% higher than January of 2013, that bill was $271,375. Our higher bill reflects increased usage of the City as a whole, plus the rate increases we experienced due to moving to another supplier. On a positive note, our natural gas rate has remained relatively stable. The City hit a new peak for natural gas on January 6th. The Street Department and other employees responded well to several snow events during this winter. As comparison to the severity of the weather, the City used 135 tons of salt and many tons of sand this winter compared to 100 tons over the last three years. As you can tell, it has been a hard winter for us all. Hopefully, only one more utility bill before we get back to a more normal amount. You might consider joining the Level Pay program the next time it is open for sign up. Citizens seem to think it is very helpful with planning and budgeting utility costs.
