MCAS- Chu Lai, Vietnam (October 1969) As soon as we were advised of the pending re-deployment to Japan, our luxury hootches had to be torn down. We had to do a lot of begging, borrowing and stealing to build these temporary quarters. The Air Force pencil pushers loved the Marines C-rations...so it was easy bartering ...but those Airborne Army guys ...it had to be a few bottles of whiskey or nothing else...lol.. if I recall most were from the Bronx . As soon as the C-130 s were airborne, the local Vietnamese came in and removed all the still good construction materials. .....then sold it back to the US Air Force & Army....The Marines were just doing their share to help the local economy....fond memories indeed.
