MDC Renewal launches livelihoods scheme Sunday, 31 August 2014 The MDC Renewal Team last Friday launched the national small livelihoods project in Ward 7, Headlands where the party donated over a thousand broiler chicks and stock-feed the local community. The donation was handed over to the community by the party’s Deputy Treasurer General Elton Mangoma. Mangoma said the launch of the small livelihoods scheme was part of the MDC Renewal Team’s response to Zanu PF’s failure of providing jobs and uplifting the local communities despite its promises in the 2013 election. He also said the launch of the small livelihood scheme was meant to assist thousands of communities across the country, who have been victims of Zanu PF’s sponsored political violence and had their homes or livelihoods destroyed during these atrocities. Other forms of assistance, Mangoma said, will be in paying school fees, buying uniforms for affected children, assisting in getting identity documents for those in need and the provision of building materials for families whose houses were destroyed due to Zanu PF’s state sponsored political violence. “As the Renewal Team, we promise to assist not only affected MDC members but also those who have been victims of Zanu PF aggression and our assistance will be in the form of the needs of a particular community,” said Mangoma. He urged the Ward 7 beneficiaries to establish an association that will assist them in putting together funds accrued from selling their chickens and ensuring the project continues and thrives. Mangoma said it was important for communities to form small livelihood projects as Zanu PF had shown leadership failure by failing to provide employment, uplifting the livelihoods of the ordinary people and assisting as government, the victims of political violence. “Instead we have companies closing down and people failing to cope as the economy is not performing,” he said. In response, the Headlands community expressed gratitude to the MDC Renewal Team for the donation and promised to make the project a success in order to uplift the lives of the local community.
