MEANINGS OF VETERANS DAY: Thanks to the American WW2 vets who held my father captive as a POW from August 1944 to September 1945. The US GIs showed him such kindness, he came to believe a new start in life could be found in the USA. From 1946 to 1948 he was held in a French camp for German POWs. During these years over a million German young men were held in POW camps run by the French, British, Russian and US armies. These displaced German men (boys) provided labor reparations to rebuild European nations devastated by Hitlers maniacal Nazi war-machine. Veterans Day has layers of meaning for those of us whose parents came to the USA after WW2. Thankful to the US vets who gave their lives to free my German family from Nazism. Thankful to US vets who treated my father as a human being after the war ended.
