MEDIA ALERT Neighborhood leaders call on candidates to take on the Children’s Agenda WHAT: A press conference to announce a resident organization project underway called the Children’s Agenda that seeks to bring greater attention to children’s issues in Detroit to the political conversation. Find out which candidates have taken the pledge so far. A challenge will also be issued to the two mayoral candidates. Optional bus tour of the Osborn neighborhood will follow. Seats on the bus are limited; press must RSVP in advance to ensure seating. Light refreshments will be provided. WHO: Leaders from four Detroit neighborhoods: Kenyetta Campbell, executive director of the Cody Rouge Community Action Alliance; Quincy Jones, executive director of the Osborn Neighborhood Alliance; Maria Salinas, executive director of the Congress of Communities Southwest Detroit Neighborhoods; and Joe Rashid, community outreach director for Brightmoor Alliance. Many residents involved with the Children’s Agenda will also be in attendance and available for interviews. WHERE: Hosted by Osborn Neighborhood Alliance, at Matrix Human Services, 13560 E. McNichols. WHEN: Press conference begins at 10 a.m. Thursday. Media transportation from downtown is available via the Detroit Bus Company, with pickup at the Skillman Foundation offices, 100 Talon Centre, Detroit. Bus will leave at 9:30 a.m. Please RSVP at [email protected] if you plan to take the bus. Bus will not be used unless a minimum of five riders RSVP. Media tour of Osborn will begin at 11 a.m. with bus loading at 10:45. Bus will return to Skillman Foundation by 12:30 p.m. WHY: This year’s election by district offers a chance for residents from all over Detroit to have their voices heard and listened to in a way that’s been absent from city politics for decades. Those residents are coming together to let local politicians know what matters to them most – an agenda that will work to improve outcomes for children. Children are too often an afterthought in Detroit’s political conversation, and residents are standing up to say they will not allow that to continue.
