MEDIA RELEASE: FIJI RE-JOINS REGIONAL ELECTIONS NETWORK Fiji - TopicsExpress

MEDIA RELEASE: FIJI RE-JOINS REGIONAL ELECTIONS NETWORK Fiji has rejoined the Pacific Islands, Australia and New Zealand Electoral Administrators (PIANZEA) Network, the regions peak electoral grouping. The Supervisor of Elections. Mohammed Saneem, said that PIANZEAs decision to welcome the Fijian Elections Office back into the organisation was yet another endorsement of Septembers General Election. This is a proud moment for Fiji and is wonderful affirmation of all the hard work that has been put in by so many people to establish a professional and independent electoral body in Fiji, he said. Mr. Saneem said that the FEO was looking forward to engaging with colleagues in the Pacific in order to continue to improve the services it provides to the Fijian people. We also believe that we have much to contribute to the Network and are prepared to offer whatever assistance and support we can to our neighbours in the region. Fiji has implemented a number of electoral reforms - including Electronic Voter Registration - that we think other member nations might be interested in, he said. Mr. Saneem pointed out that PIANZEA was founded in Fiji in 1997 and it was therefore fitting for Fiji to once again assume its position within the organisation. As one of the largest nations in the Pacific, Fiji has an important leadership role to play which extends to elections as well, he said. The Network includes electoral representatives from American Samoa, Australia, Cook Islands, French Polynesia, Guam, Kiribati, Federated States of Micronesia, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Niue, Republic of Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, and Solomon Islands. The PIANZEA Secretariat is currently hosted by the Australian Electoral Commission.
