**MEDIA RELEASE** Wednesday 26 November FIRST PEOPLES DISABILITY NETWORK RECOGNISED AT NATIONAL DISABILITY AWARDS The First Peoples Disability Network Australia (FPDN) is the national peak body of and for Australia’s First Peoples with disability. At Parliament House, Canberra last night FPDN won the national Improving Advocacy and Rights Promotion Award ahead of the UN sanction International Day of People with Disability on 3 December next week. Gayle Rankine, Chairperson FPDN said: “This is an important honour and recognition of the years of work and advocacy of many people across this country, particularly our CEO, Damian Griffis.” “Aboriginal Australians with disability are subject to double disadvantage. There are higher rates of disability among Australia’s First Peoples than the general population. We are at a critical juncture and we know our work is vital. We have an opportunity now to change the course for many people with disability in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, on their terms, and I urge our representatives in Canberra to meet this challenge with us.” “It is a great honour to work with the Board and staff at FPDN and this award is a much appreciated public recognition of our important work,” “Each and every one of us committed to self-directed, fair and accessible supports for First People with disability where ever they might live, to live well and participate in a meaningful way,” said Ms Rankine. fpdn.org.au idpwd.au/awards/ MEDIA CONTACT Sara Irvine [email protected] 0402 982 002
