MEDICINE STUDY IN RUSSIA Russians began to develop its own medical school more than 300 years ago taking the German medical education as an example. Soon it turned out that the student has excelled the master. More than 8000 leading scientists and clinicists from all over the world arrived in Moscow in 1897 to participate in XII International Doctoral Convention. Moscow University’s clinical site was considered the best in Europe by their decision. In that day an outstanding German pathologist Rudolf Virchow stated: “There is a science center in the center of Europe, which according to its fields and range of its representatives belongs to the best of a nation can create… Learn from Russians.” In the 20th century many students from many countries followed his wise advice. It’s enough to say that Russian-American Medical Association in US includes more than 10 000 members. Many graduates for Russian medical schools have become famous. So Christian Barnard from South Africa was the first to successfully complete human heart transplantation. There are many people who became famous outside the world of medicine: world-known writer Anton Chekhov, a Health Minister of Guyana Bheri Sygmond Ramsaran and Oleg Atkov, a famous astronaut. Nowadays there are more than 5 medical schools in Moscow. Each of them is a state centre and included in the list of World Health Organization list of foreign medical schools. That means their diplomas are acknowledged worldwide and the students are able to participate in national state exams for doctor license in other countries (such as USMLE in USA or PLAB in Great Britain). I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University (1st MSMU; ex-Moscow Medical Academy) is considered to be the best medical school in Russia according to all rankings. Courses in English medium are also presented at Medical Department of PFUR and at Pirogov Russian National Research Medical University. High school completion is required for application (courses of biology, chemistry, math and physics are to be completed obligatory). It is necessary to have 65-75% positive grades in these subjects in order to apply for a first year of studies without preparatory course. There is an applicant age limit in most of medical schools: 32-36 years. The courses are available both in English medium and Russian. Prospective students are able to learn Russian at preparatory courses in chosen university. Duration of such courses is 8-9 months and they begin in September – November. For those who have a good high school GDP it is available to study in English without attending preparatory course. First year of English medium program starts in September. Like in Germany, Russian MD program is 6 years and unlike US and Britain there is no need to have a Bachelor degree prior to admission. During first and second years students get the natural-science study (Chemistry, Biology, Anatomy, Math). Clinical subjects start from the 3rd year. It is expected that students are able to use Russian language at this moment: there are not that many English-speaking patients yet in Russia, still the consultation of patient for the right diagnosis is one of the most important medical skills. One of the main benefits of studying medicine in Russia is ability to obtain practical experience and skills during the courses. Students learn to examine patients and to undertake basic medical procedures on their own. During senior courses they have an opportunity to be on duty in hospitals and to assist professional doctors. Despite the fact that specialization degree is supposed to be granted after the end of studies, medical students are able to participate in scientific communities, discussing theoretical and practical issues under the guidance of the leading professionals from university. Thus the students have the ability to create basis for the forthcoming post-graduate studies. They might complete such studies in their own university either in some foreign one. Encyclopedia Britannica mentions Rudolf Virchow as one of the most prominent physicians of his century. Are you wise enough to follow Rudolf Virchow advice?
