MEET AN ARTIST! Rachel Kremidas Rachel Kremidas received her B.F.A. in painting from Indiana University, while also pursuing sculpture, creative writing, and a minor in Art History. Her work utilizes shadows as a metaphor for painting: the natural distortion of three dimensions into two, dramatized by light and color. Raised in the Midwest, she currently lives and works in New York. In her own words: The ancient Roman philosopher Pliny told a beautiful story of mans first drawing: there were two lovers, and the man was off to war. In a moment of passion, the woman saw his shadow on the wall and traced it before he left. I want my creative passion to match the passion of her whim. These fictional lovers emboldened my most recent work, wherein I used myself and other professional artists as models, capturing ourselves in creative action. I start by tracing their shadows while they install or create artwork, then I dramatize the light and color with paint. Shadows serve as a metaphor for painting, and the distortion of three dimensions into two dimensions. I have lived and worked in New York City for five years. The urban landscape has inspired my consciously muted color palette, and the creative community has influenced the subject matter. These paintings combine intuitive and conceptual processes. Among solitude, I could hone my artistic intuition in a way that is impossible in the chaos of New York City. To further develop my work, I need to abandon the concrete jungle in exchange for the Akumal jungle. Welcome to the jungle Rachel and to ALL the artists! rachelkremidas
