MEMO TO: His Excellency, Jacob Zuma, President of the Republic SA FROM: Bantu Holomisa, MP RE: UDM CALLS FOR INTERVENTION: PROTRACTED WALTER SISULU UNIVERSITY STRIKE The abovementioned matter has reference. You might already be aware that, strike action at Walter Sisulu University (WSU) has been going on for months now. This has resulted in the disruption of lectures. In the first and second quarters of this academic year, strike action only affected the Mthatha Campus of Walter Sisulu University. We now hear that, in the third and fourth quarters, strike action has also spread to the Butterworth and East London Campuses as well. This is very worrisome because it denies students access to education. We had hoped that by now WSU management and the Department of Higher Education would have resolved the problem. However, they both seem ill-equipped to do so. In fact, the Minister of Higher Education, Blade Nzimande seems to have his priorities elsewhere. We call on your office to intervene by setting up a special task team to look into the matter. We cannot sit idly and do nothing, while this protracted strike jeopardises our children’s futures.
