METRO MANILA FLOOD SUMMIT TO DISCUSS INTERVENTION, DISASTER PREPAREDNESS, INFORMAL SETTLER ISSUEs - CASTELO Key officials, policymakers, decisionmakers, and civil society leaders will converge on a one-day flood summit on Thursday (May 8) to discuss the frequent floods in Metro Manila and their strategic interventions, and the different levels of disaster preparedness, which the national government and local government units (LGUs) have been jointly pursuing to lessen their adverse effects, Rep. Winston “Winnie” Castelo (Liberal Party, 2nd District of Quezon City announced today. According Castelo, the House committee on Metro Manila development, of which he is the chair, is spearheading the one-day floor summit to discuss the issue of informal settlers, who live along dangerous waterways, and their relocation, and the various civil society and private sector initiatives to help the government to minimize the impact of floods in Metro Manila. Castelo said the flood summit will seek to update officials, lawmakers, civil society leaders, and concerned parties on recent developments about disasters, climate change, and disaster management for their better understanding of the flood issue. Castelo said the flood summit will work to crystallize various studies, views, and perceptions on the flood issue, disaster management, and other related issues with the key objective to prepare Metro Manila from the adverse consequences of frequent floods. More than 100 people from the national government, local government units, civil society, private sector, and other sectors are expected to converge at the Belmonte Hall in the South Wing Annex of the House Representatives in Batasan Compound in a session that will start at 8 am and end at 5 pm. After brief opening remarks by Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr., Metro Manila Development Authority chair Francis Tolentino and Public Works and Highways Secretary Rogelio Singson will give an update about the flood issue in Metro Manila and the strategic interventions, which their offices have been implementing to address its adverse effects. Interior and Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas will give an update on the relocation of informal settlers along danger areas, while Susana Cruz, director Office of Civil Defense, Natinal Capital region, will discuss disaster preparedness in Metro Manila. Ramon Isberto, convenor of the Corporate Network for Disaster Response, a civil society organization that deals with disaster management, will discuss private sector initiatives to help the state sector on the flood issue, while Albay Gov. Joey Salceda will discuss comprehensive and effective local government disaster preparedness program. Commissioner Mary Ann Lucile Sering of the Commission Climate Change Commission will discuss the issue of climate change and its impact on the flood issue, while Castelo will sum up the discussions in his closing remarks. #
