MINDOLO SQUATTERS REFUSE TO RELOCATE SQUATTERS whose houses were demolished by the local authority in Kitwes Mindolo North have refused to relocate to the tents mounted for them by the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit. Vice-President Guy Scott has disclosed that 120 tents have been pitched to accommodate families of Kitwes Mindolo North whose houses were demolished by the council. By Friday afternoon, a combined team of the DMMU and defence forces had mounted over 100 tents for the affected families at the expanse behind Hellen Kaunda Secondary School in Kitwe. The officers had also put up a first-aid clinic, movable toilets, connected water with four reserve tanks and an administration centre. But during a community meeting in Mindolo North yesterday, the affected families vowed never to relocate until the government finds a permanent solution to their predicament. Our houses have been demolished and we have been in the cold with our families for the past three weeks now, but one painful thing is that we have been told to go in the tents as if we are refugees. We will not move. We want the government to tell us permanent solutions and not tents, said Jackson Mwale, one of the spokespersons for the affected families. Another women spokesperson, Doreen Kashiwa said moving to an alternative place would disadvantage their children in terms of education, as most of them would stop going to school due to the long distance. Speaking in parliament during the question and answer session on Friday, Dr Scott said his office had done what was required to assist the internally displaced people. Dr Scott, however, said that investigations have been instituted following the demolition of about 600 houses in Mindolo North to bring to book the people behind the illegal allocation of land. postzambia/post-read_article.php?articleId=50593
