MINISTERING THROUGH HYMNS: The hymn, IT IS WELL WITH MY SOUL, was originated after two major traumas happened in the life of the writer, Horatio G. Spafford. The first was when a wild fire ruined him financially, because he had been a wealthy businessman. Shortly after, while crossing the Atlantic Ocean, all four of his daughters died in a collision with another ship. However, his wife, Anna, survived. The composer of the hymn, Philip P. Bliss, also died in a tragic train wreck shortly after writing this music. Several weeks later, as Spafford sailed passed near the spot where his daughters died, the Holy Spirit inspired these encouraging words to him. They speak to the eternal hope that all believers have, no matter what pain and grief befall them on earth that it is well with their souls.
