MINISTRY OF JUSTICE What is Point System? Under the Point System, *professionals lawfully residing in Korea for 1 year or over become eligible for the residence status (F-2) if they acquire certain points based on their qualifications. The criteria for assessing their qualifications include age, academic career, and income among others. (implemented from Feb. 1, 2010) *professionals : who have the status of professor (E-1), foreign language instructor (E-2), researcher (E-3), technology expert (E-4), professional (E-5), artist and entertainer (E-6), those involved in special activity (E-7), international student (D-2), press (D-5), religious practitioner (D-6), intra-company transferee (D-7), business investor (D-8), trade company manager (D-9), job seeker (D-10) under the Attached Table 1 of the Enforcement Decree of the Immigration Control Act * Those qualified for artist and entertainer status (E-6) exclude those who are working for Hotels and entertainment establishment with E-6-2 visa. Those qualified for the status of international student (D-2) or job seeker (D-10) are limited to those earned master’s degree or higher in domestic universities (graduate-to-be included) and confirmed to be hired in domestic companies. ☞ immigration. go.kr ⇨ Information ⇨ News Release ⇨ No. 67 What differences the Point System for granting F-2 status make for professionals? ○ If professionals acquire residence status (F-2) through Point System, their spouse and child can obtain residence status as well. ○ Residence status allows the visa holders to engage in a wider range of employment activities. ○ The maximum period of stay may be up to three years. What are the additional advantages of Point System? ○ If a person reside in Korea for 3 years after obtaining residence status (F-2) through Point System, he/she will be eligible to apply for changing his/her status into permanent residence status (F-5) ※ Currently F-2 visa holders are required to reside in Korea for 5 years to get F-5 status. Point System Criteria ○ General Criteria : ageㆍacademic careerㆍKorean language proficiencyㆍincome, etc. ○ Weighted Criteria : - Whether the applicant has completed the social integration program; - Whether the applicant has an experience of studying in Korea; - Whether the applicant has a working experience in professional areas outside Korea; - Whether the applicant and his/her dependents have violated immigration laws and regulations in Korea. ※ assessment criterion, method, required points will be announced on official gazette on Jan. 27, 2010.
