MINOR RAPE VICTIM SUCCUMBED TO HER INJURIES IN HOSPITAL, ALLEGED RAPIST STILL ROAMING FREE Handwara, June 16 : A 14 year old girl committed suicide after allegedly raped by a youth last month in Humpora Kralgund village in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district. On may 19, a minor girl hailing from Humpora had set herself ablaze after she was raped by a youth namely Javaid Ahmed Lone from Rafiabad Dangiwacha area of District Baramulla. According to family members accused Javaid had lured, threatened and forcibly booked her in a cab on May 17 and took her to some unknown destination and raped her. Family members said the accused, who is a driver by profession had allegedly assaulted the victim and left her at Rambag Srinagar. “She was later caught by Srinagar police who informed us about here and we immediately rushed to the Police Station to receive her,” said brother of the victim. According to the family members, the victim while coming back to home has said she wanted to marry the accused, (keeping in view the circumstances). “I called Javaid and conveyed the same and instead of negotiation he threatened me of dire consequence,” brother of the victim said. He said Javaid threatened to kill his whole family if they again called him. “Listening to inhuman response of Javid, my sister showered kerosene upon her and set herself ablaze.” However, the victim was rushed to the District Hospital Baramulla and a complaint was lodged in police station Kralgund as well. Meanwhile, a police team also rushed to hospital and recorded the victim’s statement. “The girl narrated the whole statement before inquiry officer in hospital.” However, parents of the victim alleged that instead of taking action police too looked the other way. “Statement is enough to have evidence against culprit but we fail to understand why authorities are not taking serious steps,” alleged one of the relatives of the victim. Meanwhile, after situation of the victim turned critical, victim was referred to SMHS hospital Srinagar for specialized treatment where she succumbed on Saturday after undergoing treatment for about 27 days. As the news of her death spread in area, people staged protest demonstration on Baramulla- Kupwara highway against police and civil administration for failing to arrest the accused. Family members questioned the free movement of the accused even after raping a girl in local village. “Why is he roaming free, we want his immediate arrest. We belong to poor family and want justice” said one of the neighbors of the victim family. They said the postmortem examination conducted by the doctors at Sub district Hospital Kralgund has confirmed the rape of the victim. A senior police official said, “Post-mortem of the victim was conducted SDH Kralgund and samples have been sent to a forensic laboratory. “Based on victim’s statement a case under section 309 was registered in this regard however after victim’s death the case was converted under section 306 FIR no 22/2013 in police station kralgund” he said. Sources said an inquiry officer Ghulam Rasool who was handling the case was suspended and father of accused Mohammad Ramzan Lone was also arrested by police as well. Confirming the development, SDPO Handwara said police has so far arrested father of the accused which will expectedly pave way for arrest of his accused son. “A case has been registered in this regard and investigations are going on and police is waiting for the postmortem report. It will not take much time to arrest the accused,” SDPO said. He however confirmed the suspension of inquiry officer as well.(JKNI)
