MMA fighter confident of winning bout By Pankaj Khadka The Chronicle News Local MMA fighter Travis “Tenacious” Aragon is confident his upcoming championship fight won’t even go past the first round and that he will win the match and a belt. Aragon will be taking on Paul Valdez for the 155 pound amateur championship at the Thunderdome in Denver in a cage fight Saturday at 6 p.m. in Denver. “I’ll be fighting for another belt and I feel very confident going into this fight,” said Aragon. Aragon said he has been training hard and has had good training partners at his center, Bloodline MMA, and good instructions from coach David Baca. Aragon said his game plan going into the fight is to stand up against Valdez. However, if he succeeds in taking Valdez to the ground, Aragon said he would ground and pound Valdez out. “I predict this fight won’t even go past the first round. I mean, I’m going to go in there and work on this guy,” he said. Valdez’s background is more geared toward wrestling, and he is a pretty beastly looking body builder type, said Aragon, adding that wouldn’t be much of a problem. Aragon understands it might not be as easy as he believes, and things could go wrong in the cage any time. “This guy has the power to knock me out and I have power to knock him out and I just don’t want to get caught in one of his hits,” he said. Valdez also doesn’t have as many fights as Aragon has had, but none of that really matters in the cage and when you’re fighting to win a championship, noted Aragon. If he wins this fight and his next fight, Aragon said he will be doing his professional debut. Aragon has been focusing his training on a lot of cardio, a lot of running and circuits. Bloodline offers a variety of mixed martial arts, and MMA is just a variety of jujitsu, wrestling, boxing, Muay Thai, and everything’s controlled in the cage, said Aragon. “I just don’t want the parents to get the wrong idea about it. Everything’s controlled,” he said. Bloodline is always looking for new members, and charges $10 a month for unlimited training, and Aragon encouraged everyone to come out and try it.
