MONDAY, 03 NOVEMBER 2014 We still have the Omar/Ivette bean to go…. I didn’t get the opening credits, so I hope this is the first scene: Olga is in the dressing room and is talking to Cande on the phone, worried about the baby. Amador in the doorway overhears. He comes in and asks what’s up. Olga says the baby is Mari is onstage in mid-play and we see JM at her apartment holding the sick baby while Cande puts cold cloths on it. JM stares at a big poster of the Virgin. The play wraps up; Mari takes her curtain call to great applause. She returns to her dressing room where Olga scares her by telling her the baby is sick. Next we see her rushing into the apartment. She goes straight to the baby, then looks up and sees JM just inches from her face. Both of them have their hands resting on their child. They look at each other Meaningfully. Omar is coming into castle San Ramon and Balbina tells him that he got an urgent call from a La La saying a baby is very sick and that she asked him to come, no matter how late. Omar runs back out. Olga and Amador apparently rushed home with Mari as they are standing in the background. Cande gestures for them to go to the next room and she follows. Now alone with Mari, JM says the baby has an infection of some sort. Mari is afraid he’ll die, but JM says don’t say that! He says it may be measles or something, but the main thing is to keep his temperature down to avoid brain damage. Another long Meaningful look which has more to do with heart damage than brain damage. The song Contigo plays in the background and Mari and JM are the picture of family unity as they put lil’ JM in his bassinet. They are shoulder-to-shoulder! Another long Meaningful look. The doorbell rings. Drat. Omar rushes in, sees Amador hanging out in the living room and says you’d think the father would be worried. Amador laughs. Omar bursts into the bedroom and sees JM and says ¿Que haces aqui? But we don’t get to see just yet what happens. First we get a bit of a Greek chorus: Blanca has told Rocio that Omar ran off to Mari’s house too. Rocio says oh brother, if he and JM run into each other! Omar’s big love and Marichuy are one in the same person. Blanca is impactada. At the apartment, Amador says to Cande this had to happen sooner or later. Let’s go listen in! Cande says it has nothing to do with you, but I’m in on this story. She heads for the bedroom and Amador follows on her heels. Omar ignores the puzzle of JM’s presence for the moment and goes into doctor mode, saying the baby needs a pediatrician. He goes to look at miniJM and JM crankily backs him off, saying he’s handled the matter. Omar says the child is my case. JM says I’m not here as a doctor, I’m here as a father. Omar is puzzled, Mari winces, Cande shakes her head and Amador has a good laugh. Whose father? asks Omar. This child’s, says JM. Omar is stunned, he looks at Mari. JM looks like “so there!” Ever-friendly Omar smiles and says no time for jokes. JM says it’s no joke, this isn’t Amador’s child, it’s mine. Amador chuckles. Omar smiles some more and says Lirio, tell him! JM says her name isn’t Lirio – it’s Marichuy. We are ripped away from this riveting scene to the Velarde mansion where Ceci is thinking blissful nieto thoughts. She is thrilled to be a grandmother. Poof! We’re back. Omar says Marichuy was the name of your wife. That’s right says JM. Omar says Mari why aren’t you speaking up? Tell him the truth. Mari waffles and then says it’s true. Omar is stunned. Amador says what a great scene! It’s like a super-hot telenovela. Cande looks like ewww and ushers Olga and him out. Omar gets it now. He is furious and demands why JM and Mari deceived him and made a fool of him. JM says it’s not her fault. Omar says she told me lies. JM says it was circumstances that made her do it. Omar says you’re worse! You abandoned her. JM says I never did. Omar says oh really? She sought refuge under my roof. JM says she’s the one who abandoned me – I didn’t know she was pregnant. Omar says and why? Because you had another woman in your life, a woman to whom you were legally married. JM says she was given up for dead - how could I know she was alive? Oh yeah? says Omar, and now you’re engaged to Blanca! I’d really rather not go into that right now says JM. It doesn’t have anything to do with this. Oh really? says Omar. You had Mari and you gave her up and now she’s mine, all mine! Mari looks back and forth at them. I’d say at this juncture it’s Omar 1, JM 0 as far as debate points, but the heart has its own scoring system and let’s face it, Omar’s eyes are not limpid pools. As a cheerleader for team Omar, I must say my pompoms are wilted. I sense defeat. Whew! We really could use some Grannyland right now. Twinkle twinkle. Granny tells Mayita the story of Snow White. She tells how the evil queen sent a servant to find the lovely Snow White and kill her. But the servant just finds her and leaves her alone in the woods at night, scared. Granny says I think I’ll take a little nap now and Mayita wants to hear more. Mari says I don’t belong to anybody but myself. She shoves them both out of the room and picks up MiniJM. The two guys are stuck with each other in the living room. They pace in tandem while Amador watches, amused. Mari rushes out and says the child has come out in spots and can they come help? They squeeze through the doorway at the same time. JM looks at the baby and diagnoses measles. Omar agrees. JM says he’ll get a treatment and Omar says tomorrow I’ll get my pediatrician friend to come by. JM has written down notes and wants to tell Mari. Omar says the baby needs a pediatrician. Cande says why all this fuss? It’s just measles. Amador laughs at the dueling docs. Olga says it’s late – why doesn’t everybody just go on home? JM says I’m not leaving unless he does. Cande guides them all out, laughing Amador included. JM and Omar arrive at Castle San Ramon at the same time. Blanca and Rocio are waiting by the stairs to hear what happened. Omar says goodnight and heads up the stairs. JM reports the fever is down now and it’s just measles. Rocio heads off to bed. Blanca says she was worried about Omar and Mari and JM, but JM says nothing happened. As expected, Omar is packing. He grabs his suitcase and oops, runs into JM in the hall. JM wants to know if he’s headed back to the hacienda and he says hardly, he’s heading for a hotel. Even after what he found out, he still loves Lirio. When he goes back to the hacienda, he’ll be taking her. Bye. Oh, and thanks for the hospitality. It’s the next day and Mari is telling Amador she’s not going on tonight – he’ll need to find someone else. Looks like our great director didn’t think of an understudy. He says hey, it’s just measles. If you quit off me, you have to leave the apartment. You can have it, says Mari. Amador says yeah right, and where will you live, what are you going to do for work? Are you going to take in laundry again? None of your business, says Mari, I’ll leave when the baby is better. Amador says if you leave, you have to leave today. Mari says don’t mess with me. As if all this weren’t enough, the doorbell rings and it’s Ceci. Amador lets her in and she comes in and says “hija” to Mari’s turned back. Stef is trying to get out of Martirio where Ceci has gone. Finally Martirio, who loves making her work for the information, tells her that Ceci’s gone to see Marichuy. Ay says Stef. We have a black-and-white flashback to a scene I don’t remember in which Ceci tells Stef that the house is Mari’s and she and her son have every right to come live there. Mari turns around. Amador says I’ll be running along. Oh, and forget what I said. Just artistic temperament. I’ll cancel the show tonight. I can’t find a replacement as you’re irreplaceable. Okay? You can go back on when the child is better. Mari doesn’t answer. He leaves. Ceci says I saw the baby and – such emotion! Mari says I didn’t know you had been here. Ceci says what a beautiful child, so healthy. Mari says he has measles. Ceci worries, and says you know I’m your mother? Mari says I know you brought me into the world, but I don’t think of you as a mother. Why are you here talking about these things? Why do you call me hija? Because you are my daughter, says Ceci. Mari says you’re a stranger to me. Ceci says no mother wants to lose her child. Oh yeah? says Mari. Some mothers dump their children at orphanages. Ceci says some mothers aren’t in a position to give their children what they need. Mari says which is worse, a lack of food or a lack of love? She details the hunger the orphans felt, how many were scrawny. Mari says that’s what kills me, that I actually had a mother and father. Ceci says when you were born I was very ill. I asked Padre Anselmo to take care of you. Mari says you should have held me in your arms and let no one tear me away from you. Ceci says you don’t think it tore me up to give you away? I came to look for you. Mari says you were too late, they moved me. A real mother would have looked sooner. Ceci says I was too weak. I think she says I was afraid that you’d be left in the street, that someone would steal you. Ceci says can you never forgive me? Mari just looks at her with tears running down her cheeks. Stef says damn! She’s going to get everything I worked so hard for. Martirio says and Ceci is convincing the judge that Mari should come here. Stef says supposedly the judge rules this house, but it’s not true. If Mari comes here I’m going to fight and give no quarter. Mari says I forgive you Señora Velarde. Ceci says I want you to forgive me in your heart. Okay says Mari carefully. Ceci says I hope you love me one day. As a mother? says Mari. That’s what I am, says Ceci. I want to give you a hug, a kiss! She holds her hands out. Mari tearfully struggles with her emotions. Clemcencia has come to see Padre A at the church. She misses Adrian. The padre says you’re not the only mother missing a child. Clemencia says I know, Olga. And it’s my fault. The padre says if the shoe fits, wear it. Clemencia says what shall I do? The padre says look into your own heart for the answer, and ask God. (Who cares? Let’s get back to the main action.) Mari says I’m sorry. But your arms didn’t hold me when I was shivering with fear, you never sang me a lullaby or read me a bedtime story. You hands never gave me a toy. You weren’t there when I got my first tooth. She continues with a long, sad litany of missed opportunities. Mari says if I don’t love you now it’s because I felt love for you when I was in your house, and you rejected me. You favored the other (Stef) who I always thought was your daughter. Ceci steps back. I’m leaving, she says, but I’m coming back. I may have given you up before due to weakness, or a lack of belief in myself or in the world, but I’m not going to give you up now. I’ll keep coming and coming until one day you realize how much I love you. She leaves and Mari fights tears. What stunning performances on the part of both actresses! Excuse me while I go find a Kleenex. Okay, I’m back. Amador has called Stef and is getting a laugh telling her about the Omar/JM/Mari confrontation. Oooo, says Stef, I wish I’d been there. Amador tells her it ended up with Mari telling the two guys she didn’t belong to either of them. Stef likes this part. Amador tells her she’s just concerned with the baby right now and he’s going to have to cancel the performance. Stef blows off his problem and says she can’t believe that urchin has two cultivated guys in love with her. She sees Ceci coming and says I have to go hear what happened. Besitos she says and signs off. Ceci walks into the living room and tells the judge that Mari won’t forgive her for abandoning her. Stef walks in and hears. The judge shakes his head. At the theater, Julia, the girl we saw yesterday who was mouthing all Mari’s lines as she said them, approaches Amador and asks where Mari is. He explains the situation and she says how about another actress going on? He looks at her thoughtfully. Omar shows up at Mari’s. He’s glad the baby will be okay. For a guy who’s just been duped by his best friend and his big love, he’s sure smiley and polite. He apologizes for calling her Lirio. He says he’s heard the name Marichuy spoken by JM with such pain and love. Mari scoffs that if JM loves her so much, why is he marrying someone else? Omar says and what if it’s not like you think? What if he loved you more than anything in the world? What would you do then? Mari says did he say he loves me? Omar says I asked first, don’t answer with a question. Mari says if he’s going to marry the nanny, he can’t love me. Omar points out that if that’s true, it’s equally true you were going to marry me. The judge says Mari is very ungrateful. Ceci says she said I was never there for her, not even when she was sick. Stef butts in that Mari has lots of friends, Amador for example. Ceci says how can you say that when you know how much she suffered in the orphanage, surrounded by strangers? Ceci says and when I got together again with Patricio I dedicated myself to him, just to see him and to love him. And I never told him we had a child out of fear that I’d lose him. And I should have told him because he would have understood. He would have helped. Because, she says addressing him, you are good and noble even if your profession has made you more cold, more analytical. The judge says you’re right. I’ve turned into a cranky old fart. I’m going to do everything to be more considerate and understanding. He kisses her hand. This is not going the way Stef would like and she rolls her eyes. Ceci embraces him and says I knew it. I knew you’d stop reproaching me and understand. I’ll keep going to see her until we can form the family we’d always wanted, because I love her. Mari tells Omar she’s totally confused and mixed up. She doesn’t know if she loves either of them. Omar discreetly leaves. Julia says you can’t let the public down. Amador says nobody could learn the lines in such a short time. Julia says how about me? Now JM has shown up at the apartment and he gets a baby update. Mari says why did you come? and he says because I’m the daddy. She says maybe it would be best if you forgot about that. I can’t he says. Mari says you have Mayita and you’re about to marry. JM says you’ll both never be out of my life because I’m still in love with you. He strokes her cheek and she looks confused.burning up with fever and Dr. San Roman is worried it’ll affect his brain. We see that Avances: it looks like Omar walks up behind JM while he’s stroking Mari’s cheek.
