MONDAY MUSINGS by Wangechi Kuria TIPS FOR A PEACEFUL LIVING As we up the pace and set the rhythm for the coming year, it is important to reflect on how far we have come and that we chose to live a better life. Below are some pointers that you can focus on, to help you achieve a peaceful and a productive 2015. 1. Make peace with your past to ensure it does not spoil your present. Sometimes in life, we hold on to the pains and hurt, such that they become the stumbling block(s) to our success. The best our past can be in our life time is a learning point. As such, let us begin our New Year by letting go of the past and focus instead, on our present. 2. No one is responsible for your happiness except yourself. As people, we have a tendency to often fake things or, give the impression that all is well. We then fake everything: our relationships, our careers and many aspects of our lives. We struggle as we try to please everyone even when we are really not happy. By the end of the journey we feel empty and deprived. As we begin 2015, always remember that you are the master of your own destiny. 3. Do not compare your life with others; for you have no idea what they have been through or, overcome. One of the biggest mistakes we make is when we compare our lives with the lives of others be they: friends; family; and so forth, leading us to bemoan our lives, convincing ourselves that the world is unfair, when in truth, we are not and, never will be, the same as our friend(s). So, let us start the new year by not comparing ourselves with others; let us instead, focus on who we are and seek to make ourselves better. 4. Smile you don’t own all the problems of the world. A smile is the best outlook you can have as an individual: it melts down the tensions and at the same time, makes you approachable. You don’t have to sulk or complain 24/7. Relax and propose to smile more often, even when things are not going to plan. 5.Stop procrastinating. This is a very common habit among young people: planning to do what we are supposed to do today & tomorrow but then following up with action. This habit is debilitating and reduces our capacity to achieve our dreams and goals and at the same time, reduces the quality of our work. So, as we enter week two of the new year, let us put procrastination on the back burner and replace it with ACTION! With best wishes Wangechi kuria
