MORATORIUM ON SHALE GAS A VICTORY FOR DEMOCRACY IN NEW - TopicsExpress

MORATORIUM ON SHALE GAS A VICTORY FOR DEMOCRACY IN NEW BRUNSWICK On behalf of the New Brunswick Anti Shale Gas Alliance, I want to congratulate and thank you for the persistence and hard work that you and your community groups did to achieve this amazing result. NBASGA set out to create public demand for a moratorium on shale gas and to initiate a legal action that could set a precedent in the Supreme Court of Canada to have Climate Change recognized as a threat to the “security of the person” that is guaranteed by Section 7 of The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Through your dedication, commitment and efforts, we’ve help achieve the moratorium. And, the legal action is currently heading into the discovery phase. During the past several years, there has been a rebirth of a citizen-centred democracy in New Brunswick. In the 2010 provincial election, our citizen’s movement made “NB Power Not for Sale” the pivotal issue. In the 2014 provincial election, a coalition First Nations, Francophone and Anglophone community organizations made our voices heard and 65% of voters voted for political parties that promised a moratorium on shale gas. As a result of these successes, there are many community groups that are now actively organizing around the critical issues of Climate Change, the transition to a clean energy economy and further democratic reform. We hope that you will continue to find ways to invest your energy in creating a better province for future generations of New Brunswickers. Thanks again for all your hard work. None of this would have been possible without you. Roy Ries for New Brunswick Anti Shale Gas Alliance
