MORE!!! Yes more environmental rattling on this page...two or three watery issues to be posted. Usually theres a lovely, friendly, pleasant and hard-working man called Tony who is the gentleman taking care of the upkeep of our nearby park. But one day last Summer, I was very distressed to see the enormous tractor was back - turning down into the little stream. Instead of the one man with his whizzer, (who in previous years used to cut down the long grass between the school and the stream as a seasonal tidy up) management had sent in the man with his enormous tractor and mega-cutter, again. This was very shortly after a costly environmental survey of the park had been commissioned with a public walk and talk about preserving and nurturing its ecological balance. The stream is a lovely little microcosm - where Sticklebacks had eventually returned after the last ploughing and the Kingfisher had ventured back to dive and dine. This had been an example of the best of what our responsible Town Councillors can do for our community: well over ten years ago, Michael Campbell had arranged to get that blocked mill race cleaned and cleared and the weirs restored. It was again he who had filled in the forms for the council to enter the competition last year, which won the park a national award. I couldnt bear to watch and say nothing - the thought of seeing the glorious green patches of Watercress and other stream-greenery not just flattened but the muddy devastation was simply unbearable. So I waved at the tractor driver to stop, and said very courteously that I didnt think a tractor was meant to be used anymore - and that ploughing up the stream, was not part of the new sustainable ethos of that particular public park. In fact I wasnt nearly as pompous in my words as that. Yes, my voice was raised over the racket of the tractor, but no angry shouting. It was with a politeness and a smile that I spoke. To my surprise, he got so angry that he started yelling at me and the other criminal who happened to arrive and came over in support. The driver shouted, Its people like YOU who are responsible for the economic disaster were in!! At least when I had given his words some logical thought later, I knew that if I HAD been responsible for the banks demise and whole economic collapse in Ireland, that Id never be going to jail for it. Rx PS Although I had been so sure the council had amended this practice back then, unfortunately they had not. But apparently it has since been discussed in a meeting with the Heritage Officer so it is not always in vain for an individual to talk to the people in positions to affect change for the betterment of all.....And now for the next posting.....
