MORNING FRESH WITH JODY BRESCH, Saturday, September 27, 2014: First I want to confess, just get it off my chest, that Icried a bucket of tears Thursday afternoon and evening and Friday morning and afternoon, enough to mop a kitchen floor with, but by the time Dr. Sharp came in to report on the progress of Mikes surgery around 4:00 PM I was almost serene. I didnt come by that without some grief and pain, that serenity Im tlaking about. Im not going to go into everything that was troubling me, but what was happening at home was almost as much a burden on my heart as what was going on in Iowa City was, and it was mostly out of my control. When Mike and I said, Jesus, take the wheel, yesterday afternoon at 12:00 noon, we didnt say it lightly. By then I had been in an ER room myself for an hour and a half, and had to make a great escape, a scene right out of a made for television movie, to get out of ER and back up to Mikes room because I thought they were wheeling him out at 12:00 straight up and at 11:48 am I was still wired up with electrodes. Im fine. The heart business was because I had been negligent about taking my Altelenol for 3 days in all the hubbub that was going on around Mikes foot, but I needed to know that too, so I could get down to the business of being on top of what was going on with Mikes care. By the time I had returned to ICU, a hospital Chaplain was waiting there for me, in case I wanted to talk, and talk I did. We chatted for almost 45 minutes and then again at about 3:00 PM we chatted for another 45 minutes. Mike and I prayed together more than once in those hours from 5:30 AM until he left finally for surgery at 2:15 PM, and we prayed with the Hospital Chaplain, Jeremy Hudson. We also prayed with everybody who had come here to support us when Pastor Dan arrived while Mike was still in his room, and then we had a prayer circle in the CVICU lounge after Mike left for surgery and everybody had gathered with us to wait. We had one more prayer with Chaplain Jeremy Hudson in attendance after I finally shared with everybody what I was so upset about at home. There is a scripture about praying without ceasing, and we didnt quite do that, but there was nothing overkill about it either. Chaplain Jeremy said, Prayer is like chocolate chip cookies. There is no way you can have too many of them. I like your way of thinking Chaplain Jeremy. So when Dr. Sharp came in at 4:00 PM to report ont he progress of Mikes surgery and he said he still had half of his foot left, I was first dumbfounded, and then I was borderline jubilant. I told Dr. Sharp, Mike may be really ticked off when he wakes up and finds this out. Well just have to see, but forewarned is forearmed. He left and said, I know. Then he went on to say, We removed bad stuff until we came to what was fresh and healthy with a good blood flow, a good blood supply, and we stopped. The rest of the surgery is probably going to take another hour. I said something about, So far, so good, as long as his heart continues to co-operate, and Dr. Sharp raised his eyebrows, looked at me in mutual agreement, and simply said, Yes, as long as his heart keeps up the good job. Yesterday afternoon, when I told nurse, Joey Estrada, that Mike had had 4 or 5 EKGs in the last 5 or 6 days, and nothing of them had been exactly stable, Nurse Joey went back and got another bag of heart medication to give Mike to level out his heart and regulate it, and gave it to him to maximize the function of his heart until they wheeled him off to surgery. There have been some mistakes made at this hospital in our opinion, but we are praying the effort to save Mikes foot will not turn out to be one of them. We have fought long and hard for that foot, but we were ready to surrender that fight. We actually did surrender it. I dont really believe so much that Dr. Sharp made that decision yesterday afternoon alone regardless of his PHD. He was prepared to say in Mikes best interest the foot amputation is the better idea, and yet something stopped him. I guess we will see. Im prepared though to say, we prayed, Jesus, take the wheel, and he did.
