MOST UNIONISTS ARE NOW WOMEN Our governments may not appear female-friendly, but our unions are. Women are now more unionised than men, and the workplace agenda is increasingly taking on a family-friendly bias with a special focus on balancing womens’ rights, conditions and rewards. Despite what most Australians imagine, the typical unionist is not a muscled construction worker or miner. They represent only about 6% of unionised workers. In fact, as Professor John Buchanan, director of Sydney University’s Workplace Research Centre tells us, about 30 per cent of unionists now work in schools, hospitals or supermarkets. And the latest Australian Bureau of Statistics data confirmed that women unionists have for the first time eclipsed men – 18.9% to 17.5%. The labour agenda is changing. The movement is preparing for battle to protect family-friendly work arrangements, pay parity, gender equity and training opportunities – all policies that directly affect women at work.
