MOTIVATIONAL MONDAY By Miriam Mukasa ARE YOU LEAD BY TALENT OR SELF-DESTRUCTIVENESS? How many of you have watched in despair as a friend or family member, time and time again, is lead by his/her self destruct button? Even though everything is going swimmingly well for them in their lives, all of a sudden and right out of the blue, they then press self destruct. It could be quitting a job after a minor row with the boss, walking out of an exam because they don’t like the questions, dropping a good set of friends in exchange for those who seem to lead dubious lives and so forth. For these people, it seems that without chaos in their lives, life is boring. Truth is, self-destructiveness is a sign of insecurity as well as a lack of confidence. It’s a sign that you believe that when people don’t follow your way, they are showing you disrespect i.e. you believe in the “my way or the highway” mentality. People whose lives are lead by their self destruct button rather than talent button, deserve to be kept at bay. I have learnt now that when I see someone who time and time again, is lead by ‘Self Destruction’ that it is far better to leave them alone and to focus instead, on those who are lead by their Talent button. A person who is Self Destructive will, by their very nature, also lead you down this chaotic path unless you let them go. Accept that there is nothing you can do – you can advise and support them but truth is, they need to come to their senses through hitting rock bottom. Yes, it may be painful to watch but what is the alternative? Babysitting someone and constantly covering up for them until they are in their 40s when, despite having children, they still don’t grow up? You are not doing a person who is self destructive a favour by cleaning up their mess because you are not allowing them to grow up and take responsibility. So wake up, face reality, let go and focus instead on those who are lead by Talent and not Self Destruction! Have a good day! From Miriam Mukasa
