MOTIVATIONAL evening By Miriam Mukasa SUCCESS IS A MARATHON, NOT A SPRINT RACE People often assume that there is a one size fits all manual on success or worse, that there is a short cut to success. What many do not realise is this; the path to success is not paved in gold - far from it. Prepare for lots of bumps along the way. Some may assume for example, that Bill Gates (Microsoft), Steve Jobs (Apple), Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook) and Jack Ma (Alibaba), achieved their success with little or no challenges along the way, and that they did so, in a short time frame. Not true; another misconception. Bill Gates, Jack Ma and the late Steve Jobs ran their companies from their garages or apartments in the early days, as well as encountered rejections and failures before finally enjoying success. Mark Zuckerberg (now 30), is not an overnight success; he co-founded Facebook out of his dorm room on campus. Overnight success only happens in movies. Clean success on the other hand, takes time - it is a marathon, not a sprint race so you just need to keep jogging, no matter the terrain. Sometime along the long marathon course, you will see people overtaking you. You can react in three ways: (1) Panic and try to cheat by finding a short cut to the route hoping no one will notice; (2) Drop out of the race altogether; or (3) Stay the course and just keep pushing yourself, as tired and downtrodden as you may feel. If you are a loyal ATB follower, then hopefully, options 1 & 2 will be out of the question, as far as you are concerned. So just keep going. Somewhere along the route (as you near the point of collapse through sheer exhaustion), someone will appear by the sideline of the race track and will offer you a drink of water. You may decline (assuming your mind is playing tricks on you and thus believing you are hallucinating) or, you will accept this drink of water. If you do accept the water then sip it, do not gulp. This water is worth more than the gold that you envy on your friends finger. For this water will fuel you to the end of the race so drink this precious water wisely and carefully, for you do not know how far away, the next offer of water will be. But dont do what many men before you have done; do not forget to thank your good Samaritan once your thirst has been quenched and when you get to the finishing line. For here, at the finishing line, there will be a crowd of people all proclaiming or taking credit for your success. They will be clapping and cheering you on but this crowd was not there in the early and middle of the race when you were struggling. However, you can bet your bottom dollar, they will come out of the woodwork to take credit for your success at the finishing line. Smile at them but dont fall for their shallowness. So instead of looking for people who are only at the end of the race, look up to thank the Creator and then search in the deep crowd for your good Samaritan. You may not see him/her for they will be lost in the crowd of people cheering you at the finishing line, but you can be sure of one thing; your good Samaritan will know that you cared enough to look for them. That will be enough and their job will have been done.
