MRS HEMINGWAY by Naomi Wood. Picador.2014, 1) I heard the ever so refreshing Jenny Crwys-Williams reviewing this book on Radio 702 last week. Wow, I thought and dashed to Exclusive Books to get myself a copy. Got it, Halleluja. 2) I began reading it this morning and completed reading it about 4 pm today. Its a bit of a long read but because it is well written, its not that much of an effort really. The English language is good and one learns a few French expressions like ce nest pas de saison. That is for some of us who went to Bantu education schools and were not taught French lessons. Out of season??. 3) It is about Mr Hemingway, actually Mr Ernest Hemingway and his many mistresses and how this complicates an otherwise wonderful life of a remarkable and gifted writer. He was awarded a Nobel Prize for Literature. But he was a sick man. 4) In short, very boring and sends you to sleep very fast thereafter. I wont bother you with the details. I found this to be a story of a crooked and bad man. He clearly needed help. What do they say: bad, cruel, corrupt and dirty old man. 5) I dont know why Jenny thought this was a good book to recommend. Maybe as just English literature. The writing style is awful: repetitive and each chapter predictable. Boring. I will keep the book away from my boys. 6) You can buy it to learn what not to do or how not to write a book. Sorry Jenny!
