MY FIRST EVER ROYAL WEDDING CAKE.... A few years after opening David Cakes, my first ever BIG BIG cake challenge was when I had the honour to create The Royal Wedding Cake for HRH Prince Andrew and Miss Sarah Ferguson. It was an amazing feeling being invited to design and create a wedding cake for Royalty.... It was 1986... I was working along side my wonderful Mum and Dad in our cake store when we received a letter from Buckingham Palace inviting David Cakes to create a Royal Wedding Cake for the newly engaged Royal couple. I had gone through all the motions of making a huge cake through my training during college, but in reality this was my first real big cake challenge and a Royal one! Where do I begin?... I decided to design the cake to suit the opulance of Buckingham Palace - even though I had never seen inside it (The 1980s was a time when Buckingham Palace was not open to the public). I gained inspiration from researching Royal Wedding Cakes from the late 1800s to early 1900s drawing out many designs and finaly I started my task... As through all of my career, my wonderful family and friends gathered around to support me. While I was creating the cake which too around 8 weeks to complete, Mum dealt with all the Palace officials and we were given instructions at what time to deliver and set up the cake. Finally on the morning of the 22 July 1986, at around 8am we arrived at the gates of Buckingham Palace. Once we passed security, Mum and I were led into the home of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth. We both took a deep breath and followed the official who led us through many stunningly decorated hall ways until we finally entered The Blue Room... We just stood there..WOW !I thought...I paused for a brief moment and looked at my Mum.. Her face said it all.. she smiled at me with that look of pride in her eye. I felt very blessed to be with her, the lady who I watched making cakes since I was a little boy, my inspiration, my best friend, with me, by my side on this special day! But it wasnt over just yet - I had to set the cake up!..... 0on that 5ft high table in 30 minutes... the official informed me! Uh oh I thought.. ..but I stayed calm and focused.... The ladders arrived.....spirit level at the ready... another deep breath...here we go!! It was probably at that time, one of the most challenging moments of my career, but all went well. The cake was set up, then we had to leave it and pray that nothing would go wrong. The Wedding took place, we all watched it on TV, feeling so happy, proud and full of achievement. A few weeks later a letter arrived from Buckingham Palace... HRH Prince Andrew and Miss Sarah Ferusgon would like to thank you.... Phew!! - they loved it and I was such a happy man ! Thanks again to my friends and family who have supported my dreams since day 1 and have stood by me. I love you all Best wishes always Dave :) x
