MY VIEW ON STRUGGLE KIDS : I was in the same boat of saying , ya struggle kids had the same opportunity as every other kid born in Namibia right after independence or a few years before independence but did they????? I dont think so. I was born here and was fortunate enough to grow up with both my parents and had the privilege of attending school and eventually graduated from university, with the support of my parents. Guys I think the issue of struggle kids is overlooked and has been neglected from the beginning . THE REPATRIATION process was not handled with care, that is if there was repatriation at all ! Picture this , you were born in exile, your parents died in exile. You came home in 1989 while you are 6 years old or older, yes you can still go to school BUT.... When you got back home as an orphan you were placed under care of a certain aunt, who didnt really care about you, sometimes you went to school without eating , you have no shoes and clothes. Some days she will tell you to look after goats for two weeks and you will miss school. Already you lost parents and when you got back you get to be mistreated, no social worker to talk to . You repeat each grade, you never feel loved. Eventually you fall pregnant since someone vowed to take care and love you. Desperate since there is no one who gave you such attention you fall for it. You drop out of school and the rest is History. To be quite honest , I think after independence an orphanage was supposed to be set up with care givers and social workers( to soothe the emotional pain) to ensure that these kids future were secured ( NOW it is too late). These kidss school fees were supposed to be paid for, school uniforms and everything supplied etc. When you are young you do need someone to guide you and encourage YOU and I doubt if most of those kids got such . You will never understand unless if you walked in someone elses shoes. I totally believe the government failed these kids when they returned back. Think about it..
