MYANMAR FOOTBALL FEDERATION, TELECOM COMPANY PITCH IN TO HELP SURVIVORS OF TYPHOON YOLANDA 25 November 2013 - A week after the devastation caused by typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) in central Philippines became publicly known, the Myanmar Football Federation informed the Asian Football Confederation in Malaysia that it will donate US$50,000 to assist in disaster relief efforts, according to information received by the Philippine Embassy in Yangon. As an Asian football family member, we would like to donate to the Philippine Football Federation as a strong social commitment and responsibility to lend our support,” said Mr. Zaw Zaw, President of Myanmar Football Federation, in his letter to Shaikh Salman Bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa, President of the Asia Football Confederation. Meantime, Philippine Ambassador to Myanmar Alex Chua recently received officials of Ooredoo Myanmar led by its CEO Ross Cormack who presented a donation of US$21,445.51 to help those affected by typhoon Yolanda. The Ooredoo CEO told Ambassador Chua that 35 Filipino workers at Ooredoo Myanmar initiated an emergency relief collection in an attempt to provide much-needed assistance to those affected by typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan). The initial amount of US$7,000 was apparently tripled by Ooredoo management team led by Mr, Cormark who himself is married to a Filipina. “At Ooredoo Myanmar, our people are our passion,” according to Mr. Cormack who was accompanied by other Ooredoo officials, namely, Lorna McPherson, Dean Hughson, Loida Sagaran and Thiri Kyar Nyo. The officials told the Ambassador that Ooredoo Myanmar, with the help of very able Filipino workers, will roll out a comprehensive portfolio of services in Myanmar including mobile money services, mobile health services, and services to help farmers leverage their income via easier access to information. The visit and pledge of donation by Ooredoo Myanmar was also witnessed by two officials of [email protected], the only Filipino organization in Myanmar. In June 2013, Ooredoo was selected as one of the two successful bidders awarded with a telecommunications license to build a nationwide 3G network and deliver an accessible, affordable and modern mobile telephone services to the people of Myanmar. Following the Ambassador’s advice on how the cash donation may be sent to Manila, Ooredoo Myanmar later informed the Embassy that the donation was deposited in favor of the Philippine Red Cross.
