MYTH: Driving barefoot is illegal. FACT: There is no state statute prohibiting DWB, driving-while-barefoot. Though barefoot driving is not prohibited, some state agencies aren’t in favor it. Driving in bare feet, socks or stockings can also be dangerous, causing your feet to slip off the gas or brake pedals. While wearing certain types of footwear while driving or driving barefoot is not illegal, vehicle control can be compromised, and it is not recommended. Another risk of driving barefoot is leaving your footwear in the floorboard of the driver’s side. Loose shoes can slip underneath the pedals and cause either the gas or the brake to get stuck.
