Madagascar Fishing Report part 1. It has always been a dream for me to travel on a fishing adventure to Madagascar, and how if it is with my best friends and fishing buddies Nick, Sam, Wahib, Roger, and Nicola. Sam and I met in Dubai and traveled via Kenya to Madagascar while Wahib, Nick, Roger and Nicola traveled from Lebanon via Paris. After almost 4 days of traveling we arrived in Diego Suarez and we were all excited to start our fishing adventure in what is considered as one of the best fishing areas in the world. The fishing trip started slow and we didnt manage to catch a lot of fish the first two days. No one seemed to have an answer to why the fish were not biting. We saw a lot of fish but yet we were only getting few bites. After day 3 the fishing improved but we were still in the range of 15-25 fish per day but it was still below our expectations of 40 to 50 fish per boat. We had some good moments during these days Nick managed to get a 28kg GT gimbaless and so did Wahib. On day 4, I decided to shift to bait fish to test if there were fish and I managed to hook monster groupers (god knows how big 100kg+) within seconds but I failed in every attempt to lift the fish from the bottom. The peak of the trip was when Nicola hooked a monster fish with his Zenaq Fokeeto FC-12 jigging rod . After almost 35 minutes of fight at full power, Nicola retrieved a 200kg white tip shark. At every moment Wahib was worried the rod would break however the Zenaq managed to standup to its reputation and it really made our day. We all felt very proud of Nicolas achievement given how under-powered his gear was to the fish Another beautiful moment was when Roger was jigging at 20 meters and saw a monster grouper go all the way to 5 meters to swallow his jig. The grouper took the jig and line all the way down to the cave in like 5 seconds without giving him any chance to stop it. Even though we caught fish less than what we anticipated because the fish were not biting and the bad weather (we only got 1 day with no winds), it was still a great fishing trip because of the variety of species, amazing wilderness, and exceptional organization of Philippe and his team. What makes fishing in Madagascar so amazing to me is that there is no limit to what you can catch. Every bite you get could be a 1 kg fish as well as a 200kg fish. The ocean is so wild with drop-offs fro 20 to 200 meters. There are spots you would go all the way from 500 meters to 10 meters bank 30 miles away from shore. We were alone fishing in the whole western region up north of Madagascar. We managed to catch some good fish and we also lost a lot of fish due mainly to sharks. I remember in one afternoon we reached a spot where we would hook a fish instantly to loose it to a short. The 8 days of fishing and sleeping on the catamaran passed so quickly that we didnt notice that much time has passed. We lost track of time and we couldnt recognize what date we were in. On behalf of the team, I would like to thank Philipe, Nicola, Jean Pierre, and the rest of the team for the great hospitality and of professionalism. I look forward to return next year to Madagascar but this time to the east coast where we there tales of 50+kg GTs ripping the lures and breaking up the lines. If you wish to plan a fishing trip of a lifetime, I would encourage you to consider Madagascar and no one but Phillipe and his team and i assure you wont regret it. Phillipe, thanks again for everything and see you in 2015.
