Made it home safe and sound! Twelve hours and 300+ miles of Southern California riding and both hands have painful calluses welting up. It hurts so good! :-) Things got interesting at the end of the day when I made a bad choice on a lonely stretch of dirt road and wound up with a 600+ pound motorcycle (fully loaded with a full tank of gas) nearly stranded in a sandy dry wash. Id realized my mistake in time to turn the bike around and get myself wedged into a tough spot like Austin Powers turning that golf cart in a narrow corridor. The sun was going down as fast as the temperature was dropping and I was preparing for the worse when a sudden gust of torque secured purchase on a hidden boulder beneath the sand and the giant bike and I lurched forward and out of the sand pit. Once I had the beast moving I wasnt about to quit and a few minutes later I powered my way out of the sand trap and back onto hard pack. Night then dropped like a blanket before a full moon rose over a nameless range of mountains to the East. Perhaps the best part of this day was the discovery of a spectacular camp site less than an hour from Los Angeles. Sawtooth Canyon is without question one of the most beautiful natural settings I have ever seen. Im pretty sure the entire area is nothing less than the exposed insides of a long dead volcano. The camp is pristine, with beautiful sites situated so well that theres hardly need to leave your campsite to experience the area. And best of all the campsite is free! You can bet Yumiko, Emily and I will be enjoying some desert nights out here after the family arrives and were settled. Altogether, a great day with lots of new memories and place to share with my family soon. :-)
