Magande Accuses Govt of Squandering VAT Refunds Former Finance Minister Ng’andu Magande has wondered why government is stalling on paying the mining firms K650 million Value Added Tax refunds. Magande, who is also National Movement for Progress, leader said it was clear that government had squandered the money for the VAT refund and was now playing hard ball with the mines. He said there was no excuse for Zambia Revenue Authority Commissioner General Berlin Msiska to claim that there was no money to refund the mining firms. “Mr Msiska was my Commissioner from 2002 and 2007 and we always found the money to pay the VAT refunds. What has happened now?” Magande said. “For me when I was searching for the answer I think I found it in what the NAREP leader Elias Chipimo said that the money was there but government misused it so go and ask them because this is something that is not even supposed to be controversial.” He added: “We have been finding the money since 1997 until now but since somebody has misused the money they now want to hold the country to ransom.” A storm is brewing in the mining sector with government refusing to pay the VAT refunds owed to the mines who have warned of reduced production and job losses if the money is not paid. zambiareports/2014/10/14/magande-accuses-govt-squandering-vat-refunds/
