Magic for Personal Gain I hear all the time that we never should perform magic for personal gain. Theres simply no rationale or historical basis for this. Certainly our ancestors used magic in their daily lives: they blessed their livestock and crops; they performed magic to assure fair weather, needed rain and good harvests; they sought to divine the future to aid in decision making; they were adept at the magic of healing; they cast spells of protection on their homes and families; they used magical herbs in their ointments and potions. Today, we have to live. We have to pay the mortgage or rent, we have to eat and feed those we love, we have to clothe ourselves and our family. There is nothing immoral, illegal, selfish or unethical about using magic to help see to our needs. I speak of legitimate needs and actions - not swindling, larceny, fraud or theft, for example - that are in keeping with our individual highest good. Theres no historical basis for for a blanket prohibition against the use of magic for personal gain. Magic is a skill like any other. Once a person has invested his or her time and energies in learning, practicing and developing magical abilities - unless the persons tradition expressly prohibits it - theres no reason not to use this skill set. Really, do construction workers have a rede that directs them to build things only for others - and take no paycheck for it - but never for themselves? Do accountants have a code that permits them to prepare taxes only for other people - and to do so gratis - but not let them balance their own checkbooks? Do chefs have a law under which theyre allowed to cook only for others - and expected to do so for free - but not prepare meals for themselves and their families? No, no and no. Use the mundane means that are available to you to attempt to solve problems and address undesirable conditions or unsatisfactory situations. But do not feel constrained in the appropriate use of magic to make your life better and to bring about needed changes. It is perfectly acceptable to employ spell work to assure your own health, protection, prosperity and healing. This includes methods to boost your psychic powers, increase your happiness, help you to sleep better and promote love in your life. You can also use magic for success in legal matters, to help you with divination, to promote prophetic dreams, and to attract good luck. Magic can also to help you to safeguard your home and possessions, help you when you are traveling, and help you with employment. You are limited only by your imagination in the applications for magic to improve your life and to assure your highest good - and those of your family, friends and clients. Use it to make the world a better place - thats appropriate, too.
