Maj. Gen. Livingston is covered by a Quilt of Valor. The quilts are a labor of love put together by volunteers around the nation who are committed to honor the sacrifice of service members. Maj. Gen. Robert E. Livingston Jr., the adjutant general for South Carolina Army National Guard and his wife Barbara were presented a quilt by Anne Mixon, S.C. State Coordinator for the Quilts of Valor Foundation during a ceremony at the Adjutant Generals building, Columbia, S.C. July 15, 2014. “Our mission is to cover all service members and veterans touched by war with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor,” said Mixon. “It is our way of saying thank you.” Mixon told the group in attendance that the quilt for the Livingston family is part of a larger goal, adding their S.C. Chapter has presented more than 540 quilts to South Carolina service members in 2014 alone. South Carolina has the most requests for quilts of any other state. Each flag is individually handmade by one of the organizations dedicated quilters and then personally presented to service members and takes between 50-100 hours each. Recently, Mixon has been working with Courtney Bucknam, the family readiness group leader for the 124th Engineer Company out of Saluda who have been deployed for the past 12 months. “The family readiness group has been working on this quilt making project since January,” said Bucknam. “We usually have 20 -25 people from the family readiness group and the quilts of valor group working about 4 hours, one Saturday a month. The group uses the opportunity while working on the quilts to talk about issues and share their common bond while their loved one is deployed. “We are planning to present our quilts to our soldiers at the 60 day yellow ribbon event in September,” said Bucknam. The Quilts of Valor Foundation has presented 103,052 quilts since 2004. “We appreciate all you are doing for our service members,” said Livingston. “There are times when separated from families that you do feel alone.
