Major Adolphus Dolly Richards was born in Loudoun County, VA in 1844 and attended Randolph Macon College until the Civil War broke out. He enlisted with Turner Ashbys cavalry until 1862, then joined the staff of Gen. William Grumble Jones until enlisting with Mosbys Rangers in 1863. Dolly distinguished himself in Mosbys Rangers, achieving the rank of Major by 21 years of age. He was referred to as a dandy at times, but he was fearless - even participating in a nearly successful capture attempt of Gen. Phil Sheridan. He grew up at Green Garden in Upperville, VA (pictured) and rose to become a judge in Louisville, KY later in life. He was a brave and knightly soldier, an exemplary citizen, a Christian gentleman, and worthy of the reward of a life well spent, a work well done. (courtesy of Eric Buckland)
