Major Harry Health Update: So, Kit Sutherland took Harry and I out - TopicsExpress

Major Harry Health Update: So, Kit Sutherland took Harry and I out to Avondale where my boy got seen by a WONDERFUL vet, Dr. Gail Powell-Johnson at the Atlanta Veterinary Eye Clinic. After a very thorough, thoughtful pre-exam interview, she and an assistant carried out an exam (with Harry wrapped in a warm towel treated with Feliway) involving lights, magnifying lenses, microscopes, anesthetic and a tear test. Then we got a detailed lesson on cat eye anatomy and diseases of the eye. Basically, we learned that Harry was indeed very sick, but not anything incurable -- just really, really bad herpes infection that has got to the point his eyes were producing no tears and his eye discharge was from his body pumping up the other two substances that normally help lubricate the eye. But he had extreme dry-eye, from the tear gland being attacked by herpes virus, so very painful eyeballs and the back of his eyes (retina) has ulcers on it from advanced infection. So, for treatment, he has FOUR topical eye medications he needs three times a day -- an antibiotic, a herpes-specific anti-viral, a tear stimulator and a feel good anesthetic to kill pain. Im giving that to him for a week and then checking in by phone next Thursday, then coming in after that, if it isnt better. The doctor hopes the topicals will be enough but if not hell need something down his throat or a shot to really attack it. OMG, I am -so- glad I took him in!!!!!
