Major update post! Follow up hearing test today shows a 30 decibel improvement across the board. .. including all but one of the frequencies I was totally deaf! The significance of THAT being the nerve and/or hair cells arent dead, just damaged. This at least leaves hope for full recovery. The only thing holding todays report back from being a significant improvement is, while I can hear sounds, they sound WRONG. More importantly, I still cant understand speech. But, thats a yet as far as Im concerned. Its been an excruciatingly slow process over the last month, but the improvement has been steady over time. At any point, there might not be further recovery. But every day this trend continues means the next day may bring the same :) One thing mentioned specifically, which is a good sign, is my previous nerve damage recovery experiences which are comparisons for how I personally heal. Luckily (?) my neck surgery left me with NO feeling in the outer layers of skin (superficial) along my cheek and jaw (they cant avoid all damage to some branches of the facial nerve for that surgery.) Same outlook: if you steadily improve, what you have at 6 months is about what youll end with. At 6 months, I had most of the feeling back. .. but it felt wrong- just like I have improved hearing, but it sounds all warped. But my face nevertheless continued to improve over another 6 months or so, and now I cant tell the difference. Nerve damage in my wrist followed the same pattern. Slow, and then slower, but FULLY recovered. Im still acknowledging I may have to accept this as is at some point and preparing myself as best I can. Getting ANY hearing back was critical for hope. Got that. Speech recognition is now the critical milestone for the next stage. Heres to hoping for the day when I stop saying talk to the good ear, please. Now...if the follow up MRIs for my brain insult show any improvement since last month, youll be hard pressed to convince me the perfume wasnt the culprit. AND if my hearing continues to improve, I would hope my brain follows suit. Im not sure Ill ever wear perfume again though! Today was a good day.
