Make a Good Impression Completing your education is the first - TopicsExpress

Make a Good Impression Completing your education is the first major step to embarking on your new career, but once you have completed your program, you still need to secure the job you want. In a competitive job market, it is more important than ever to make a good first impression. Whether interviewing for a job or completing an externship, conducting and presenting yourself professionally is key. You may have the same exact educational background and level of experience as another candidate, but if they are perceived as more professional, they may get the job. So what does professionalism mean, exactly? • First of all, it means having a professional appearance. o Make sure going into any job interview that you are aware of the standard of dress for that business and dress appropriately. o It is always better to err on the side of being “too dressed up” than appearing too sloppy. Even if the work environment is casual, dressing a bit nicer for an interview can leave a lasting impression. o Interviews are NOT the time to take fashion risks or try out that “new look.” Avoid bold patterns and heavy jewelry that can distract from the reason you are there – to talk about why you are the best person for the job. Opt for more traditional, classic dress that looks clean and professional without arousing too much attention. Women, in particular, should avoid clothing that is too revealing, tight or otherwise ill-fitting or inappropriate to a job situation. Once you have made a good impression with your appearance, it is important to carry that professionalism over to your behavior. • Probably the biggest mistake you can make right off the bat is being late. o Employers are leery of hiring someone who can’t even get to the interview on time. Check your directions, plan your route and figure in traffic to ensure you arrive at interviews early (about 10 minutes is a good rule of thumb). This also gives you time to acclimate to your surroundings, take a breath, relax and mentally review the points you’d like to get across or questions you may have. A good, firm (but not painful) handshake and making eye contact with your interviewer upon introduction also makes a good impression, and of course a smile goes a long way. • Do not chew gum and do not smoke right before an interview. • Once in the interview, try to answer questions directly and speak concisely. • Use a more formal tone and avoid the use of slang or profanity. • It is okay to relax and be yourself – you want to show your personality –just keep it professional and focused on the job rather than any issues or challenges you have outside of the workplace. When you finish an interview, make sure you thank the person who interviewed you for his or her time, and when you get home, don’t hesitate to send a follow-up thank you note or email as well.
