Malawi’s First Cancer Treatment Centre Goes to Lilongwe after a heated debate After a heated debate in Parliament on where government should construct its first ever national cancer treatment centre, the House on Tuesday agreed to have the centre built in Lilongwe, the country’s administrative as well as capital city. Earlier, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) administration had announced in parliament plans to have the ambitious project implemented in the southern region city of Blantyre and not Lilongwe as per initial communication, claiming the ‘principles’ of the K5.3 billion ($13.1 million) loan meant for the project, Opec Fund for International Development, stipulated that the facility be situated close to a medical school. The decision to relocate the centre did not go down well with most members of the House who argued Lilongwe was geographically well positioned for the cancer centre citing reduced transport costs for anybody wanting to access the facility from any place in the country, it being at the centre. The fierce debate that ensued on the matter forced the Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Development, Goodal Gondwe to refer the Loan Authorization Bill for the project to the Health Committee of Parliament after the committee’s Chairperson, Juliana Lunguzi, reminded the House of Standing Order 125(3) which requires a relevant parliamentary committee to scrutinize a bill before it is tabled in the house. “Our Standing Orders afriem.org/2014/09/malawis-first- cancer-treatment-centre-goes-lilongwe- blantyre-mzuzu-considered-soon/
