Budget sales job failing, says Malcolm Turnbull Malcolm Turnbull has suggested the government is struggling with its budget because it failed to adequately make the case for change, including waiting too long to release the report by the Commission of Audit. The Communications Minister also said Australia relied too heavily on income tax revenue and indicated elements of superannuation were too generous by describing the tax system as “incredibly concessional to older people who have made their money”. Discussing concerns at the forum from business leaders and economists about the seemingly impossible task of achieving reform in today’s adversarial political climate, Mr Turnbull said: “If you want to effect any change, you’ve got to persuade people they’ve got a problem to begin with. “First explain the policy, and that doesn’t mean just put out a report, that means really explain and propose it and for people in my line of work, repeat yourself again and again and again” he said. “Then you’ve got to outline your solution and why that is the right one and unless people accept that there is a problem they won’t act.’’ Mr Turnbull said the Coalition had good credentials in highlighting the importance of debt and deficit ever since he as opposition leader opposed Labors second $42 billion stimulus package. afr/p/national/budget_sales_job_failing_says_malcolm_1QWkNzzCmUsc2F43u1Dk7H
