Male Attendants 1907. Hospital for the Insane, Parramatta - TopicsExpress

Male Attendants 1907. Hospital for the Insane, Parramatta (Original photo my collection). Whilst they might look like Keystone Cops they actually had specialist training as mental nurses. The staff of NSW lunatic asylums were given formal training from the early 1880s, which began at the Tarban Creek Asylum which soon had a name change to the Gladesville Hospital for the Insane (Asylum to Hospital). In fact the earliest Australian text book for employees of asylums was written by Dr William Cotter Williamson, then medical officer at Parramatta which was published in 1885. Only have identified two of the attendants: Michael Cleary 2nd right back row & William Koen, 2nd left middle row.
