Malingering refers to the intentional production of false or exaggerated symptoms for the intention of gaining something (e.g., winning a personal injury lawsuit, getting hospitalized instead of incarcerated, or getting prescribed medication you want to sell or abuse). Many myths of malingering exist, including that it rarely happens, and that its antisocial behavior demonstrated by antisocial people. Actually, malingering occurs much more frequently than the average person or healthcare professional thinks. Furthermore, people neither have to be antisocial nor involved in a criminal matter to malinger. (Rogers. 2008. Clinical assessment of malingering and deception. NY: Guilford Press.) P.S. The word antisocial does not imply that someone dislikes socializing with people, which is how some people happen to use the word. In psychology, this word refers to a long pattern of behavior characterized by a disregard for rules, laws, and norms which is often related to legal, relationship, and occupational problems.
