Man arrested for setting off firecrackers in Davao City ABS-CBNnews DAVAO CITY - Authorities have arrested a man for setting off firecrackers in McArthur Highway, Matina, Davao City Monday midnight, amid terror threats in the city. According to the residents in the area, they thought the explosion was from a bomb since it was strong. The police immediately went to a vacant lot where they found the suspect, Patric John Kristin, who denied setting off the firecrackers. Authorities arrested the suspect after they recovered several firecrackers from him. Possession and use of firecrackers is strictly prohibited in Davao City. Security in the city was intensified after national police said they had received reliable information about a possible terrorist threat to Mindanao, particularly in Davao, the countrys third largest city with a population of more than 2 million. All police forces were alerted to beef up security operations against possible infiltration of suspected members of said reported threat groups, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said in a statement. Authorities, however, did not mention the nature of the possible attack, nor identify any group, although parts of Mindanao are plagued by Al-Qaeda-linked militants as well as communist guerrillas waging a decades-long insurgency. -- with a report from Paul Palacio, ABS-CBN News Southern Mindanao
